Unclutter your blog - sidebars

Hi all!! Today is just another part of the Uncluttering your blog extravaganza!! I will focus on just one thing today, as i find it that important to have its own post. So the topic for today is: managing the badges and awards displayed in the sidebars!

That's right! I think most of the people agree with me when i say that badges and awards displayed wide and open on your sidebars only distract attention and don't do much good to your blog. I had my share of awards on my sidebar before(here take a look at the before picture, if you will):

And as much as they mean something to me, i am 100% it means squad to people vising my blog. And since I'm determined to unclutter my blog and make it more accessible to my visitors, that's exactly what I've done...(here's the after picture):

Ah, much smaller, more concise, less space wasted! I know that generally when i myself, stumble upon blogs i love the ones that have everything organized and clean looking.. more free space on the sidebars.. more well categorized posts.. i say information available and no wasted blog space is the key!
Oh and if you want to know more, you can read about how to unclutter your blog or other SEO advice right over here!

Resizing the YouTube Videos

Here's the scoop on easy HTML tips, SEO (search engine optimization) and all news on technical features and softwares!

The topic for today is: resizing the YouTube videos!

This one's easy. First you need to go to the video on YouTube that you want to embed in your post. Each little video has its own embedded code for you to copy and it's located in the bottom right corner of the clip. Click the embed button, then copy the code and paste in your post. What you need to change from the code to actually fit your blog's layout is the width=" " and height=" " size. Here's an example from the new Harry Potter trailer:
Now this video's code says the values for width and height are 640x385. You want to make this video working with your layout so for this you need to change the width="640" into your main wrapper's width(you can find that if you hit the Design button in your dashboard, then the Edit HTML button, then find the "#main-wrapper" value and look for the width). It should look something similar to this:
The number shown in the width is what you need to determine the width of the video. In this case it should be 700, but just to make sure it fits(in case you have other frames or stuff) I'll say 600 should be safe. Now that we determined the width of the video we need to find out the height too. To determine the height of the video without making it look stretched out, the formula for that is this:

original width = your blog's width
original height     new height

in our case:
640 = 600 => x= 600x385 => x = 360
385       x                 640

So the right code for this video to fit a 700px wide layout would be this:

You need to change the 640 and 385, from before, into 600 and 360, both in the upper part of the code and in the lower part as well. That would make the video fit like so:

Unclutter your blog

Today we'll take it slower and relax, kick in with a cool ice tea and cleaning a bit our blog. Yup that's right, today we'll look into few ways of helping your blog look cleaner. Who thought relaxing and cleaning could ever be in the same sentence?!?! anyway..

1st. first thing that need to be cleaned up is the top of your blog's page.. that is the first thing your readers see. You can start up by hiding the navigation bar. It works wonders!

2nd. and the most important thing in the upper part of your blog is your blog banner. So when you're creating your banner, make sure it's coordinated with your blog first, but also know when too much is too much. Pick only one style(scrapbook-y look, picture, text or vectors look), and never mix and match as your result might be disastrous! Also Java looks more professional, I'm with you, but choosing that will make your site load slower..unless you have a host that allows you that luxury. But we're not talking Ferrari and Jaguar now, we're here with Volvo and Ford.. so take your time, drink some tea and work with what you have:)

3rd. well after the blog banner, the thing that usually drives readers away is a cluttered sidebar. If it's full of a bunch of de-centered and random buttons, you need to get on that immediately. I already told you how to center/decenter your sidebar buttons and how to size up you sidebar buttons.. so that should be of help for now!

4th. making your information available fast for your readers but don't clutter the sidebars. You can do that by tags. Yup that's right. Arrange all the posts in categories by tagging each of them accordingly. When you're done, add an HTML gadget on your sidebar and submit all posts with that tag to it.. If you don't know how to do that, let me know in the comments section and I'll get to explain that in our next tutorial:)

5th. Remove widgets showing which country your visitors are from. The internet is wide and open these days, and it's no Carrie Underwood revelation anymore if you have a visitor from north pole(love the ice there:). Plus you can use your blog's stats tool that Blogger made available now, for marketing purposes!

6th. Remove recent comments widget. This doesn't help neither you, nor your readers, and the only thing they do, is just clutter your space. Displaying half a sentence from a comment that is already displayed in the comments section doesn't make sense; it only wastes more of your precious blog space.

7th. Remove email subscription forms from the sidebars or homepage. There's many people confused by these forms, because they look pretty similar to a searching box. So a better way to keep that option open for your readers is to dedicate a special page just for that or if it didn't prove to help your blog much, simply remove them completely.

OK people these are the first tips to fight blog clutter with the mighty force sword:) Here's the latest unclutering your blog posts! Make sure you don't miss any of these as they will keep coming.. after all why just spring and winter cleaning??? why not summer cleaning too?!?!:) I say, hello!!

Adding Your Signature

Here's the scoop on easy HTML tips, SEO (search engine optimization) and all news on technical features and softwares!

The topic for today is: adding your signature at the end of a post!

There's many ways, but i'm gonna show you the easier one with the help of My Live Signature to host it for you and you don't even have to register or so:)
Go on their website and click "Don't want to register? Proceed", then you can choose to either create a signature right there with their wizard, or have one already done in Photoshop and want it to be hosted by them, or have an image you'd like to use as signature. For example i take the one that can be created right there with their wizard. I click on it and then write down the name i want to use as signature and then hit next:
Then you can choose from 120 fonts .. so i choose one random one: Then the size of it: Then choose the colors for the font and for the background(it can even be transparent): Then the angle for the signature: Then hit next and you're pretty much done with creating it:) Then click the "use this signature" link, then "generate HTML code" and you will be given two codes there, for handwritten signature or for a mix of info with signature; i choose the handwritten signature and here's the code that was given:
Now proceed to installing it into your blog: you log in into your blogger dashboard, go into your "Settings" tab, click the "formatting" button, scroll to the bottom of the page and paste that HTML code into the box at the bottom, like so:
Hit save and you're done.

M&M's

FF are my M&M's in the morning'.. can't go without 'em:)

And as always today is not just a regular Friday, it's also Aloha Friday! If you have no clue what Aloha Friday is already, go to An Island Life and you'll figure it out pretty fast:)
Now my Question here is:

Soda or natural juice?? and why??

My answer:
Definitely natural juice. It's more natural for one, and then, it's not making me thirsty as much as bubbly drinks. Actually what i drink more during the summer is plain freezing cold water.. it keeps me cool longer.. but if i were to choose something else other than water or iced tea i would say natural juice.. especially the orange one.. oh and it MUST be WITH PULP:) Now what would you choose and why??
